This seems to be a common issue, You go to connect to a friend or stranger and after a pause you get "Connection Failed". This will fix the issue. If you don't feel confident enough to make the changes within your router most major companies offer a 2 or 3 year free phone technical support and will guide you through the process.
Once you load the game click on theHOMEbutton. The GFWL dropdown will appear.
In the GFWL dropdown clickSETTINGthenNETWORK.
UPNP should be listed as Available, in use
NAT should be MODERATE or OPEN
If UPNP is listed as UNAVAILABLE:
1. On your computer go into your control panel and find Windows Firewall. Turn it off. If you have a 3rd party firewall turn that off too.
2. Restart the GAME
UPNP should say Available, in use. You should be able to connect to friends now unless your NAT is STRICT.
If your NAT is set to STRICT:
1. Make sure you have the correct posts listed in your router
2.Add all port strings in BOTH Port Forwarding AND Port Triggering The port ranges should be as follows:
Port Range
TCP 80 80-90
UDP 88 80-90
UDP 3074 3070-3080
TCP 3074 3070-3080
UDP 53 50-60
TCP 53 50-60
TCP 443 440-450
3. Make sure to ENABLE ALL
4. Make sure UPNP is listed as ENABLED in your router
5. ENABLE DMZ to your computer
6. MOST IMPORTANT... Save and RESET (turn off and back on) to make sure the changes take effect. Some routers will save the change but the changes don't go into effect until the router is powered off and back on.
Your NAT should now show as Moderate or Open and UPNP should now say Available, in use and you should be able to connect to everyone. Please don't assume that Windows Firewall is off and skip that step. In a recent Windows Update it reset the Windows Firewall to "on" and "strict" That step should not be overlooked.
If you still show NAT is Strict and UPNP is unavailable please make sure the port numbers are correct before contacting your router and computer manufacture for further assistance. You may also wish to have the people you're trying to connect to check their settings as it may be their settings blocking the connection.

|||Amigo, i disabled Windwos Firewall and Completly Turn off Eset. Restart the game, and UpNp is still Unavailiable.
Also This guy says on windows 7 UPnp is renamed to "network discovery"
http://www.skulltag.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16461
I have everything setted up, like ports Nat is moderate, In windows network sharing allowed.
But me and me friend still cannot connect to each other. Actually We are 4 friend from Czech Republic that cannot connect to each other, but to anyone else yep.
|||Yes, but UPNP I mentioned above is the setting within your router. It needs to be enabled within your router settings. UPNP within your Operating System is set to default as enabled for your internal and external devices. If UPNP was disabled in your PC your keyboard wouldn't be working.
Have you contacted your Internet Service Provider to find out if they block ports on their end?
|||Oke, i will contact them tomorrow. Lets see what they will tell me and thanks for an answer..|||Can you also ask your 4 friends to check their settings too.. I know the chances are slim all 4 friends don't have the security setup right but it's always a possibility. I'm also curious on the answer you get from your ISP if they're blocking ports.
|||Well, mine ISP told me that there are no ports blocked on their side, and mine friends same..|||Hello. I did all of this instruction and now I can play pvp match in Sparta, but the problem with connection to other player in co-op quests is remaining. When I start a co-op quest I see a message "Games for Windows Live connectin failed.
Help me please (and sorry for my english )
Thank you for posting a complete unabridged help guide for people with connection issues.
Would a Mod please pin this?
|||Just to add, make sure the person you're connecting to has NAT Moderate or Open and their UPNP is listed as Available, in use.
It might not be your connection but their connection that is blocking it.
|||i followed al the steps u mentioned and it still wont work. in gfwl home upnp shows available in use , nat open for both me and my friend and it still didnt connect . help pls :(|||
Yes, so did we. And we still cant connect.
Im too frustrated to try anymore, i have wasted mine money to call ISP for some blocking ports rly ? Nah, until the services changes or your technicians fix the current problem we will not play aoeo at all. Its shame, that microsoft games have online service like that.
Anyway thanks, for any answer that u posted. Because there is like noone instead of you Bill, that is answering on forum.
|||We still can't connect.
Please be advised Eastern USA and Eastern Canada were hit with a hurricane. 3 Million people in New York City are still without of power. A major Internet hub/gateway that serves Eastern Canada, Eastern USA and International connections to Europe was damaged along with an OC 148 Internet Data Cable.
Other Hubs and gateways have taken on the additional data requests that the New York City hub would normally handle. Although you may not use the damaged gateway personally, you may still experience "hiccups" in your service due to the added users and requests that your hub/gateway handles.
Possibly when you try to connect to each other you are using overloaded linescausingthe connection to fail. Please wait until these hubs are back up and running.
Also check the speed of the connection, ask your friend for his external IP and type "ping (put IP address here)" into command prompt (windows powershell in 7) and tell us how many milliseconds it takes.
